A gilet solves precisely the problem a thermal jersey does not: it stops the wind hitting the chest on a descent while leaving the back open so the rider does not overheat climbing. Windproof front, breathable back. That is the entire garment.

The two things that decide whether it gets used are packability and sizing. It must fold small enough to live in a rear pocket, and it must be cut to go OVER a jersey, which means sizing up from the jersey size rather than matching it.

We sublimate the front panel so club colours carry across the whole kit, and we cut the back long so it still covers when the rider is down on the bars.
